Sarvangasana
Sarva means all and Anga, organs of body. During practice of this posture, all body organs are effected, hence the name.
1. Lay down on your back.
2. Join heels and big toes by sides, hands resting along with thighs and palms facing down.
3. With inhalation and retention, raise both legs to 90º.
4. Further bend them towards head to make a balance to prepare further rising of hips and trunk.
5. Now with the support of palms, holding sides of back, arms and elbows resting over floor, raise trunk in the vertical line of legs.
6. In the final posture trunk, hips and legs keep on vertically erected and their total weight resting over shoulders, chin touching to sternum notch, legs relaxed, eyesight fixed on big toes, and breathing normal.
7. Keep the legs straight, not bent.
8. Maintain the posture for a few minutes or less according to capacity and return to normal laying posture with inverse order of the practice.
9. Take care that head doesn’t rise above floor while returning and no jerks are experienced through out the maneuver.
10. Perform smoothly and rhythmically.
11. Relax for a minute in Shavasana.
Note
- Practice of Sarvangasana, initially looks bit difficult but after mastering, it is very rejoicing to Sadhaka.
- Sarvangasana Practioner may perform Halasana in continuity or separately as per his wish and comfort.
- Those who can not practice Shirshana due to old age or other reasons can practice Sarvangasana as alternative and be rewarded with the equivalent fruits thereof. If one can do, he should practice this posture regularly.
- A perfect posture of Jallandhar Bandha can be experienced in this Asana.
Benefits of Sarvangasana – For a little span of time, extra blood supply to heart and other vital organs of body is enabled from inverted legs (due to gravity), thereby providing them a soothing effect. Heart becomes restful. Improves and balances vascular, respiratory, digestion and nerve systems. Invigorates thyroid glands thereby giving a balanced growth to all body organs including genitals, Improves memory and concentration power and stops untimely hair graying and falling, helps to maintain chastity and overcome wet dream problems in young aspirants, thereby ensures good health and complexion. Practice of Sarv?ng?sana paves way to practice Yoga more intensely and efficaciously. Enhances flexibility of spinal column.
